What's Holding You Back?

What's Holding You Back?

What’s holding you back?… What’s holding you back from becoming a healthier version of yourself, from developing as a person, from increasing your emotional healing?… In past blog posts, we dove into how to create goals and follow through with them with an action plan. But, through that process, you may have become more aware of the road blocks that hold you back. Is it a friend or family member that speaks negatively about the journey you want to go on? Is it self-sabotage/negative self-talk? Are you afraid that your plans will go differently than expected, so you let fear take the wheel?…

Awareness is Key

Making changes in your life, in all aspects, is extremely scary. So, what do you do to overcome those obstacles so you don’t remain stagnant or fall back into old patterns? The most important thing that you can do is to first become aware of what’s holding you back. It can be difficult to admit to yourself that a family member or close friend may be holding you back from improving your life, but when you become aware of it, you can really make a breakthrough.

Take Action

Once you become aware, you have to take action. Now, I’m not saying to go ditch that close friend, or quit talking to your family. Having a serious talk with a loved one about where you are taking your health and life, and that you would really love their support, will work more effectively than you think. If that doesn’t work, you may have to decrease your contact time for a bit as you develop strong healthy habits. Whichever route you decide to go with an unsupportive friend or family member, one of the best actions you should be taking at this time (and all of the time) is surrounding yourself with people that make you want to be a better person. People that challenge you and inspire you. We all hear the cliché, “You are who your closest 5 friends are,” but it’s incredibly accurate. Surround yourself with people who work hard, who are optimistic, who encourage you to get better everyday, and who are always improving. That community can be in-person, online, even podcasts can help take the motivation, positivity, and action on your goals to the next level. If negative self-talk or fear is what tends to hold you back, I also recommend the advice above. Surrounding yourself with people who want to get better, can help flip that script. And because you are now aware of the negative self-talk, everytime that you think something negative, stop it in its track, and tell yourself that you’ve got this. Awareness is key because thoughts become habitual.
